Don’t Get Stuck: How to Overcome Frozen Shoulder

What is Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is a condition where the shoulder joint becomes stiff and painful due to thickening and tightening of the joint capsule. This leads to restricted movement and discomfort that can last for months.

The 3 Phases of Frozen Shoulder:

  • Freezing Stage – Gradual increase in shoulder pain, with progressive loss of motion (can last 3–9 months)
  • Frozen Stage – Pain may ease, but stiffness is most severe (can last 9-15 months)
  • Thawing Stage – Shoulder mobility slowly improves (over 15-24 months)

Symptoms:

  • Constant, deep shoulder pain (often worse at night)
  • Difficulty with overhead, behind-the-back, or across-body movements
  • Gradual restriction in daily activities like dressing, reaching, or driving

Treatment Options:

Management focuses on pain relief and restoring movement:
  • Physiotherapy – Gentle stretching, mobilisation, strengthening
  • Medication – Pain relief or anti-inflammatory medication prescribed by your GP
  • Hydrodilatation or corticosteroid injection – In some cases, to reduce inflammation and pain
  • Home program – Regular exercises to maintain flexibility and mobility

How Physiotherapy Can Help?
