First Steps in the Morning Hurt? What to Do About It!

Plantar Fasciitis: A Pain in the Heel!

Plantar fasciitis is a common and often frustrating condition that often feels worse first thing in the morning. It affects the thick band of tissue running along the bottom of the foot. This structure, known as the plantar fascia, connects the heel bone to the forefoot and plays a crucial role in absorbing shock and supporting the arches. When it becomes irritated or inflamed, it can make every step feel like walking on hot coals.

Causes and Risk Factors:

Plantar fascia pain typically develops due to excessive strain on the fascia. Common culprits include: poor foot biomechanics, tight calf muscles, prolonged standing or sudden increases in activity levels. It is particularly common in runners, people with flat feet or high arches and those who spend long hours on hard surfaces.

Symptoms to Watch For:

The classic sign of plantar fasciitis is a sharp or stabbing pain in the bottom of the heel. It is usually worse in the morning or after periods of rest when the fascia tightens. The pain often improves with movement but can return after prolonged standing or high-impact activity. If left untreated this can progress to constant pain without relief.

Treatment and Rehabilitation:

Recovery from plantar fasciitis requires patience and a combination of strategies. Physiotherapy is highly effective, focusing on stretching the calf and plantar fascia, strengthening foot muscles and correcting any biomechanical issues. Hands-on techniques such as massage and joint mobilisation can help release tight structures.

Other treatments include ice therapy (applying ice for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day, with a cloth between the ice and skin), taping, footwear modifications and orthotics (both custom and over-the-counter) for additional support. Most people see improvement within six to twelve weeks, but chronic cases may take longer.

Ignoring plantar fasciitis can lead to prolonged pain and compensation injuries. Get back on your feet faster and with fewer setbacks by coming to see your physio today. If your heels are screaming at you, it is time to listen and take action!
