Could Your Knee Pain Be a Meniscus Injury?

What Happens When You Twist Your Knee the Wrong Way?

That sudden knee twist playing sport or stepping awkwardly off a curb can cause more than just a twinge. Could it be your meniscus?

What is the Meniscus?

Your meniscus is a rubbery shock absorber in your knee joint. Each knee has two — one on the inside (medial) and one on the outside (lateral). Together, they protect your bones and keep your knee stable.

Common Signs You’ve Hurt Your Meniscus

You might feel:
  • Pain along the joint line
  • Clicking or catching when you move
  • Swelling hours after the injury
  • Difficulty straightening the knee
Not all meniscal injuries feel serious at first. But they can linger and lead to bigger problems if left untreated.

Why Meniscus Injuries Can Be Tricky

Some meniscal tears don’t show up clearly until weeks later. Others seem to heal, only to flare up during sport or long walks. That’s why an early assessment can make a big difference.
