What is TMJ Disorder?
The temporomandibular joint, or TMJ for short, is the hinge that connects your jaw to your skull. It allows you to talk, chew and yawn. The joint consists of three parts (your skull, your jaw and a little disc that it slides on). When something goes wrong with this joint, it is known as TMJ Disorder or TMD. This condition can be frustrating, painful and sometimes downright annoying. What Causes This?
In many cases, a single cause of this disorder may not be clear. Poor posture is one of the easiest changeable factors, but it can also be caused by teeth grinding or jaw clenching, often due to stress. Trauma to the head, neck or jaw (including major dental work) can all be linked. You can even develop arthritis in your jaw... Talk about a painful conversation! What Kind of Symptoms?
Symptoms can range from mild to severe. Jaw pain is one key indicator, but other signs include clicking or popping sounds when opening the mouth (the jaw slipping on/off the disc), difficulty chewing, headaches and ear pain. Some people experience their jaw locking in place (usually the disc getting behind) temporarily, which is as alarming as it sounds. How Can Physio Help?
Physiotherapy offers effective treatment for TMD. Manual therapy helps improve mobility, while specific exercises can be used to help the joint to function better by keeping the jaw on the disc. Stress management strategies can reduce teeth grinding and clenching. Most patients will see a significant improvement in their symptoms within 3 to 6 weeks. If your jaw has been giving you grief, it might be time to see your physiotherapist. Your TMJ works hard every day – it deserves a little care and attention.
