Do you get pain just below your kneecap when running, squatting, or jumping? You may have patellar tendinopathy also known as jumper’s knee.
This condition affects the tendon connecting your kneecap to your shinbone. It’s common in sports like basketball, volleyball, and netball, but it can also affect runners and gym-goers.
Why Does It Happen?
The patellar tendon absorbs force with every jump, squat, or landing. Overload, muscle weakness, tight calves or thighs, and poor movement technique can all increase risk. Learn more in our Tendinopathy Healing Guide.
Common Symptoms:
-
Pain below the kneecap
-
Morning stiffness or pain after sitting
-
Symptoms that improve as you warm up but return after activity
What Helps?
Rest alone rarely works. Physiotherapy uses load management, isometric pain-relief exercises, progressive strengthening, and sports physiotherapy programs to restore tendon health.
