Understanding Sciatica: Causes and Symptoms

Is That Leg Pain Sciatica?

Ever felt pain shooting down the back of your leg when leaning forward in a chair, getting out of the car or even just walking? That could be sciatica. While sciatica is not a diagnosis in itself, it is a way of describing a pattern of symptoms that usually point to irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. This large nerve starts in your lower back, passes through the gluteal muscles, and runs all the way down the back of your leg to your foot.

Sciatica Symptoms

The pain may be sharp, burning, or even feel like pins and needles. It often follows a predictable path and might worsen with bending, sitting, or certain movements. While some people feel it mainly in the back, others notice it more in the buttock, back of their thigh and calf, or even the ankle.

Can Sciatica Be Resolved?

The good news? Sciatica can often settle quickly once the underlying cause is addressed. A thorough assessment helps identify whether the problem is due to a disc bulge, irritated joint, or tight muscles. Physiotherapy often plays a key role in guiding recovery and preventing flare-ups.
